MUSCLES OF LOWER LIMB

There are all total 60 muscles in lower limb and it is divided into 4 regions.

1. Muscles of hip = 13 muscles.

2. Muscles of thigh = 14 muscles.

3. Muscles of leg  =  13 muscles.

4. Muscles of foot  =  20 muscles.


Muscles of hip.

Divided into two groups

1. Iliac region/ anterior hip = 3 muscles.

a. Iliacus

b. Psoas major

c. Psoas minor

2. Gluteal region/ posterior hip = 10 muscles.

-Divided into two layers i.e.

a. SUPERFICIAL = 4 muscles

a.1 Gluteus maximums

a.2  Gluteus medius

a.3 Gluteus menismus

a.4 Tensor fascia Lata

b. DEEP  = 6 muscles 

b.1 Periform

b.2 Obturator internus

b.3 Obturator externus

b.4 Gemellus superior

b.5 Gemellus inferior

b.6 Articular genu 

Muscles of thigh 

Divided into three compartments 

1. Anterior region = 6 muscles 

a. Sartorius

b. Rectus femoris 

c. Vastus medialis 

d. Vastus intermedialis 

e. Vastus lateralis 

f. Quadratus femoris 


2.Posterior region = 3 muscles 

a. Biceps femoris 

b. Semi membranosus 

c. Semi tendinosus


3.Medial region = 5 muscles 

a. Pectineus 

b. Gracialis 

c. Adductor longus 

d. Adductor brevis 

e. Adductor magnus 

Muscles of leg 

Divided into three compartments 

1. Anterior = 4 muscles 

a. Tibialis anterior 

b. Extensor digitorum longus 

c. Extensor hallucis longus

d. Peronius tertius 


2. Lateral = 2 muscles 

a. Peronius brevis 

b. Peronius longus 


3. Posterior = 7 muscles 

Three layers. 


A. Superficial - 3 muscles 

a. Gastrocnemius 

b. Soleus 

c. Planteris 

These three muscles are together called calf muscles. 


B. Intermedialis - 2 muscles 

a. Flexor hallucis longus 

b. Flexor digitorum longus 


C. Deep - 2 muscles 

a. Popliteus 

b. Tibialis posterior 

Muscles of foot 

Divided into two compartments 


A. Dorsum of foot = 2 muscles 

a. Extensor hallucis brevis 

b. Extensor digitorum brevis 


B. Sole of foot = 18 muscles 

Divided into four layers 


1. First layer = 3 muscles. 

a. Abductor hallucis 

b. Flexor digitorum brevis 

c. Abductor digiti minimi 


2. Second layer = 5 muscles. 

a. Flexor digitorum accessorius

b. Lumbrical 1 

c. Lumbrical 2 

d. Lumbrical 3 

e. Lumbrical 4


3. Third layer = 3 muscles. 

a. Abduxtor hallucis 

b. Flexor hallucis brevis 

c. Flexor digiti minimi


4. Fourth layer = 7muscles. 

a. Palmer inter ossei 1 

b. Palmer inter ossei 2 

c. Palmer inter ossei 3

d. Dorsal inter ossei 1 

e. Dorsal inter ossei 2 

f. Dorsal inter ossei 3
