Muscular branches of ulnar nerve

Youtube link for ulnar nerve.

Muscular branches of ulnar nerve is present only in forearm and hand.

Forearm muscles :-

Forearm muscles is divided into two compartment, namely;

1. Flexor compartment.
2. Extensor compartment.

But, ulnar nerve supply only to flexor compartment.
Flexor compartment is again divided into two groups, the first one is superficial and the second one is deep muscles.

Under superficial muscle, ulnar nerve supplies to flexor carpi ulnaris and under deep muscle, ulnar nerve supply only to medial half of flexor digitorum profundus.

Note - Lateral half of flexor digitorum profundus is supplied by median nerve.

So, for forearm muscles; ulnar supplies to flexor carpi ulnaris and lateral half of flexor digitorum profundus.

Hand muscles :-

Hand muscles is divided into four groups :-

First group of muscles :-
1. Abductor digiti minimi
2. Flexor digiti minimi

Second group of muscles :-
1. Lumbrical third
2. Lumbrical fourth
Note - Lumbrical first and second is supplied by median nerve.

Third group of muscles :-
1. Opponens digiti minimi
2. Adductor pollicis

Fourth group of muscles :-
1. Four palmar interossei
2. Four dorsal interossei

One more muscle named PALMARIS BREVIS which is present at the medial side of hand is supplied by ulnar nerve.

Axillary nerve

Axillary nerve has C5 and C6 root value and it arises from posterior cord. It divides into two division in quadrangular space named, "posterior division and anterior division". Deltoid muscle is supplied through the branches of both division but posterior division only supply to teres minor muscles. There is third branch of axillary nerve too which supply the structures of shoulder joint. Further posterior division forms upper lateral cutaneous branch of arm and similiarly anterior division supplies to skin in the lower lateral part of deltoid muscles.

Clinical :-
1) Anterior division of axillary nerve wind up around the surgical neck of humerus and since anterior division supplies to deltoid muscle which is a main abductor of arm. So, in case there is fracture around surgical neck of humerus, abduction of the shoulder joint joint is not possible.

2) Posterior circumflex humeral artery runs along with anterior division of axillary artery.
